2nd Brain: Needs Finding and Validation

January to April, 2017

-Context-based Medication Adherence System-

Teenagers with chronic illnesses juggled between medication and life. How to improve the medication adherence for them was challenging. My team members and I conducted qualitative research to study what problems teenagers with chronic illnesses were facing and what they needed to improve their medication adherence. 2nd Brain was the final solution that we came up with.

My Role

What we used: Literature review, competitive analysis, in-depth interview, focus group, affinity mapping, survey

I worked on this design project with another 5 students in UMSI Design Clinic. I experimented different research methods and helped design iteration in the design process. I pitched the product concept to the client.

Findings

Teenagers with chronic condition juggle between medication and life. They depend heavily on the caregivers but also are trying to learn to be independent.

“I don’t want be constantly mindful of my medication schedule or have people around me to be overly aware that I’m chronic.”

--Joy

“I wish I could know when she is not taking her medicines and what she is feeling. I don't want to be a nagger, but I have to.”

--Joy's Mom

Design Process

Based on the needs, we started to brainstorm and drew the wireframes on the whiteboard to decide the features and devices.

Then we tried to validate the idea with the stakeholders. Based on the feedback, we decided to firstly use the wearables.

Solution

Add Medication Page

Improved Scheduling Process

  • Add to existing schedule feature allows you to easily add new medicine to already scheduled events.
  • Give it a nickname to help you memorize

Allies

  • Invite others to help you stay on track with your medication
  • When you missed a medicine, allies will be notified to remind you
  • Send a weekly adherence report to your allies so that they can better understand you

Allies
Diary

Diary and Report

  • Use customized Emoji to record how you feel after taking a medicine
  • View your adherence and recorded effects overtime
  • Invite your allies to see it so that they can also understand your condition

Feedback & Reflection

“Your research led you to a clear understanding of the struggles of these teens, converging to spot-on design insights...The design has created an innovation in addressing the user needs and the product concept dramatically improves the current solutions.”

--Dr. Lee (Client)

“It is by far the best thing I've seen for a medication/symptom app. I love everything, and how it all seems to be so easily adjusted and made to fit your own needs. I love the clean layout, the calendar, the "allies" section, and especially love that you chose the word "allies".”

It was hard at the beginning without a medical background. The literature review is difficult. And I was shocked by how hard the life could be for teenage patients with chronic illnesses. They need great efforts and assistance to maintain a normal life. 2nd Brain is one of the solutions that could be helpful. I am really honored to be part of the team and glad that the users like it a lot. Our next steps will be:
